Zachary Chase
Materials scientist advancing ceramic 3D printing for stronger, more resilient spacecraft.
Zachary Chase is a PhD candidate in Materials Science at Caltech, developing novel ceramic composites for next-generation spacecraft technologies. In partnership with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Zachary is redefining how advanced ceramics are made—integrating laser powder bed fusion with reaction bonding to fabricate high-temperature Al–Al₂O₃–YSZ structures, all without the need for binders or compaction.
By introducing targeted interfacial treatments to printed architectures, Zachary enables selective densification, dopant-driven crystal stabilization, and enhanced thermal crack resistance. His work reveals how carefully engineered dopant partitioning can stabilize cubic ZrO₂ and transform disordered aluminum–zirconia composites into robust alumina–zirconia systems. Through kinetic modeling, in situ characterization, and phase-specific control of sintering pathways, Zachary is creating the ceramic frameworks that could one day survive the surface of Venus and form the backbone of thermal shields, engine liners, and structural supports in harsh space environments.
A first-generation scholar from Mississippi, Zachary brings deep experience in both polymers and ceramics, uniting innovation in processing with a lifelong commitment to leadership, mentorship, and the future of space materials.
